Omahuta Forest

Omahuta Forest to Puketi Forest - 31+ km 9 hours

Leaving Omahuta with autumn mist in the valley, I was soon into bush, walking on forest roads for a couple of hours. Then the route goes down to a stream - managed to find a track for two thirds of that ... A lovely stream at the bottom to walk along in a narrow gorge for an hour, enjoying the cool water on my feet every few minutes in the next crossing. It then joined a larger river.

The track then followed that river upstream (see pic) - after some time trying to keep to the river bank I found that it was much easier in the river too, crossing to and fro in thr shallower parts. Then 4 kms up a fairly gentle ridge track through a huge grove of regenerating kauri trees. This took me onto another forest road that has recently been remetalled, and I managed a wrong turn on a new road to the quarry from where all the metal had come.

Back Again

Mangamuka Saddle on SH1 to Omahuta - 21.5 km, 3 hrs 50 mins

Escaped from Auckland this morning, enabling me to start walking at midday. A SH1 road walk down the Mangamuka Gorge with the bush close on each side - not much traffic compared to elsewhere. Through the settlements of Mangamuka and M. Bridge, then off on a side road to Omahuta, arriving just 2 minutes before my pickup. Looking forward to a long walk through the Omahuta / Puketi Forests tomorrow.
